Creating a School Environment Without Violence

 Read more >>Recently, bullying cases have become increasingly common in Indonesia, especially in school environments. Of course, this action should not occur in a place where children are studying.

Responding to this, lecturer at the Faculty of Education, Muhammadiyah University, Jakarta (FIP UMJ) , Dr. Sri Immawati, M.Pd., explained several factors that cause bullying and strategies for preventing it.

According to Sri, bullying is closely related to brawls. Bullying is the definition of violence in schools which has several types, including physical, psychological, economic violence, social status, and so on. "This is part of a brawl, meaning that children who brawl generally do bullying ," explained Sri.

Sri believes that the main factor causing someone to bully comes from the family environment. Unharmonious family conditions or broken homes , a child's lack of attention from the immediate family, and inappropriate education for children can lead to the formation of poor behavior.

The second factor is the influence of seniors in the school environment. In general, a student can commit violence because he is influenced by his peers who also do the same thing. Apart from that, the attitude of seniority in the school environment also encourages acts of violence or bullying , where the victims are weak juniors.

The third factor is the self-awareness of the perpetrator of bullying to commit acts of violence. “There are cases where students have actually looked for schools that are holding brawls. "Before entering school, students usually have analyzed several schools, so the main goal is not only to learn but also to fight and become part of the community," said Sri.

So, what are the appropriate steps to prevent bullying or violence in the school environment?

Talking about prevention means treating. Based on the reality that occurs in the field, almost every day brawls occur among students. In general, people ignore this and think that brawls are a thing of the past. In fact, to this day it still happens.

Parents, as the first place of education for children, of course must understand how to educate children properly and correctly. Apart from that, it is important for parents to know the background of a child's school environment and social interactions. Bullying is a unique case, it requires cooperation between all elements, such as parents, teachers and the community to overcome bullying .

There are several strategies for creating safe and comfortable schools without violence.

First, provide adequate facilities and infrastructure in the school environment. Facilities and infrastructure can support an effective and enjoyable learning process for students. These include facilities and infrastructure such as the School Health Unit (UKS), playground and library.

Referring to Taufik Ismail's statement which said "Juvenile delinquency is triggered because they are not busy," Sri explained that he meant being busy with literacy. So, it is important for schools to provide literacy corner spaces for students. This is also encouraged by the role of a teacher to foster interest in reading in students.

The next strategy is supporting technology, character strengthening, extracurricular activities, and parental care. Apart from teachers and friends in the school environment, parents have the most important role, especially in maintaining communication between the school and parents.

Teachers as educators in schools also have an important role, especially in creating effective and enjoyable learning. A teacher cannot force a student to feel happy when the teacher himself cannot create comfort. Teachers must consider students as subjects, so that cooperation can be established between teachers and students.
